The Hong Kong Parliamentary
Debating Society (the Society) is built of members of the English Debating
Teams of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong
Kong. The Society is formed around a simple proposition: why shouldn't
Hong Kong enjoy great successes in international debating competitions,
and bring the joy and intellectual dynamism of these tournaments to the
Hong Kong community by hosting one right here in Hong Kong? Having experienced
the thrill and excitement of debating at international competitions ¡V
including the World Universities Debating Championships, the All-Asian
Debate Championships, and the Australasian Debating Tournaments ¡V we wish
to share with others in Hong Kong the joy and value gained from Parliamentary
style debating. The purpose of our forming the Society is to lift the
standard of Hong Kong's performance at the international competitions,
and thereby promote Hong Kong both as a community laden with debating
talent, and as a city of the highest educational standards.
In the long-term, the Society
hopes to take up a role in leading Hong Kong to a success in the international
debating arena, and eventually to host a major international debating
tournament in Hong Kong. Our core strategies for achieving these goals
are built around developing debating talent and fostering a vibrant debating
community in Hong Kong.
